The scientific article, co-authored by Isa Gasimov, head of the "Enterprise Azerbaijan" portal, operated by the Center for Analysis of Economic Reforms and Communication (CAERC), was published in the internationally renowned, Scopus-indexed "Global NEST Journal".
The article "Performance Modeling and Field Validation of Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems in Semi-Arid Azerbaijan: A Pilot Case Study" analyzed the environmental risks posed by domestic wastewater in rural settlements without centralized sewage systems in the Shamakhi-Gobustan region of Azerbaijan, which has a semi-arid climate. Field measurements conducted as part of the study revealed biological and chemical pollutant indicators (BOD, COD, nitrates and coliform bacteria) exceeding WHO standards.
In order to solve these problems, a decentralized pilot wastewater treatment system was modeled in semi-arid rural areas on the example of the Tekla village. The system demonstrated high efficiency in reducing pollutants, providing an average reduction of 85% in BOD and 70% in COD. At the same time, the developed mathematical model demonstrated high consistency with real field results and confirmed that the approach can be applied to other water-scarce regions.
The research results provide a practical example of cost-effective and climate-resilient sanitation solutions that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 13 – Combating Climate Change).
It should be noted that the “Global NEST Journal”, where the article was published, is an open-access, Scopus-indexed, Q3-category international scientific journal in the field of environmental sciences and technologies and has a wide academic readership.
